Sore Throat

In most cases, sore throats caused by viral infections will resolve on their own without the need for antibiotics. For these types of infections, rest, hydration, and soothing treatments are often all that’s needed. Gargling with warm salt water several times a day can help alleviate irritation, as it reduces swelling and kills bacteria in the throat. Drinking soothing herbal teas, such as chamomile or ginger tea, can provide warmth and comfort, while honey and lemon can coat and soothe the throat, offering immediate relief. Keeping the throat moisturised by drinking plenty of fluids is essential, as dehydration can worsen throat discomfort. If the pain is severe, over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce fever and ease pain. For more persistent irritation, throat lozenges or sprays containing ingredients such as benzocaine or menthol can temporarily numb the area and provide relief. If a bacterial infection like strep throat is suspected, a doctor will prescribe antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria and prevent complications. It’s important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed to ensure the infection is fully treated.
