Colic is very common in babies and can show up at about three weeks of age. It typically lasts for a few months and can be a very frustrating time for parents. Colic is characterised by periods of excessive, uncontrollable crying and upset, which in turn appear to be due to abdominal discomfort or pain. Some hallmark signs of colic include crying periods that occur almost every day, especially at the same time, clenched hands and fists, an arched back, and task failure: you can't get your kid to stop crying. What exactly causes colic isn't really known, but most of the attention is given to a colicky baby's digestive system (maybe it's gas?) or the unique wiring of a neuroimmune system that isn't yet smoothly integrated, but it's important to note that this usually resolves on its own by three to four months of age.
