Glue Ear (also known as otitis media with effusion) is a common condition in children in which fluid becomes gummy and thick in the middle ear, causing hearing problems, pressure in the ear, and repeated ear infections. Sometimes it resolves on its own, but sometimes a child will need ear tubes or hearing aids. Allergies, sinus infections, and second-hand smoke are among the causes, so if your child seems to have any trouble hearing or if they say 'what?' often, go to a caregiver. If left untreated, glue ear can cause permanent hearing loss or speech delays in children.
