Macular degeneration is an eye disease that causes the loss of vision in the central part of the retina, known as the macula. This causes difficulties with seeing small, detailed images clearly. Blurred and wavy vision are a result of any vision left. Risk factors for macular degeneration are age, hereditary factors, smoking, and an unhealthy diet. There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry. If caught early, it can be treated and managed to keep the progression of macular degeneration slow. Regular screening is essential in order to look out for changes in the eyes and detect any course of macular degeneration. If spotted early on, treatment may include eye drops, injections, and laser surgery.
